Joseph Garrard

My name is Joseph Garrard. I am a piano technician serving the Phoenix area, based in the East Valley. I provide high-quality tuning, regulation, and piano repair services. My whole life, I have been around music. My mother began teaching me piano at 10, and I played nearly every woodwind through high school. After high school, I studied piano performance at Eastern Arizona College for two years, while concurrently training with Michael Stilwell at the Piano Technician Academy (PTA). After EAC, I started working for Michael at Stilwell Pianos and for Matt Brown, a piano rebuilder in Tempe, Arizona. Working with Matt, I gained a wide variety of experience, including tuning, voicing, and repair in homes, schools, piano studios, churches, performance venues, and for professional musicians. Additionally, I assisted Matt with his rebuilding projects. Usually, the full rebuilds included belly work (shimming soundboard cracks, regluing loose ribs, and bridge repair), restringing (with new pin blocks), and action work (installing new hammers, whippens, damper felts, etc, and regulating them to feel just right). Working with Michael, I maintained used pianos in-store and prepared them for professional videos, usually just needing pitch correction, light regulation, and light voicing.
